“Lonely hearts’ pages torn from newspapers. All descriptions that do not relate to the artist have been marked out (black ink). Leaving only words that the artist feels match her idea of her identity. Pages are pined in rows to the gallery wall.
In many cases, when people look at information about others, e.g. personal ads, they immediately consider their own identity / see themselves looking back. Today’s self-help culture emphasises our identity and the traits that make up the picture we are. It tells you that self-fulfilment can be reached by clocking up a list of attributes. Self-obsession, who am I, tell me more about me, it’s all about me….
